Sketches on washi paper, Aso, 2015
The notebook is an inventory of all Japanese works of the artist, the sole idea of which already refers to the old concept of a sketchbook, which was a record of thought processes, a way of documenting memories from an erudite journey, a collection of ideas, which were born out of exotic stimuli and observations. Here, Rożnowska has reduced Japanese views and silhouettes of elderly people to minimum, making them into a linear form, though a very sophisticated and subtle one. Referring to the tradition of Powidoki (Afterimages) by Władysław Strzemiński, she has given her observations an individual, Polish filter, at the same time anticipating the transience of these impressions, which are about to become memories. To create her work, she used layered washi paper, as thin as tracing pages. Its transparency corresponds with the idea of layers of memories in memory. The memories that are multi-sensory and create a specific image in one’s head, as described by Edawrd Hall in The Hidden Dimension.
Linear outlines also marked the beginning of the next project – My katagami.
